Freeport - McMoRan: Dig Into Mining - Microbial Mining

In this activity, students explore the role biological technology plays in mining and wastewater treatment.

Students research how microorganisms are being used to treat and restore metal-contaminated waste water through direct
and indirect bacterial leaching mediated by chemical reactions. In addition, they predict and explain the outcome
of an oxidation-reduction reaction involving the metal iron.
