Wildfires are any unplanned fires that burn in forests and other wildlands, such as shrub or grass communities. They’re a powerful natural force we must fully understand, and respect, in order to best help control. Nearly nine out of 10 wildfires nationwide are caused by humans and could have been prevented.
Benefits of Fire
Not all fires, or their effects, are bad for the environment.
Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires.
Some ecosystems depend on periodic fires. In these fire-adapted areas, fire promotes plant and wildlife diversity and burns away accumulations of live and dead plant material (leaves, branches, and trees).
Prescribed fires, also known as prescribed burns or controlled burns, refer to the controlled application of fire by a team of fire experts under specified weather conditions that helps restore health to ecosystems that depend on fire.
High-tech firefighting tools – like satellite imagery, fire behavior modeling, fire-retardant materials and water delivery systems – continue to improve, but the most crucial elements are still wildland firefighters and hand tools.
