Raising Dragons: Floating Orange Science Experiment

Easy experiment to demonstrate buoyancy to kids.

Ask them if they think the unpeeled orange will float or sink. It’s pretty weighty so they will likely think it will sink. Surprisingly it floats. Then ask them what will happen if they peel the orange. Surprisingly again it sinks. The skin of the orange is porous and holds a lot of air which causes the unpeeled orange to float. The skin acts like a life vest for the orange!
