National Wildlife Federation: Planning Your Research

Pretend that you are a scientist interested in doing whale research.

Choose one of the species from the list to study, and think about what you would like to research about that species. Prepare an imaginary application for a permit to conduct your research.

Objectives:
• Review the current guidelines of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.
• Provide background for a hypotheical permit application for research on the marine mammal of your
choice.
