The University of Arizona: IMPACTS-MS Foundations of Functions and Functional Reasoning (Grades 5-9)

What is a function and why do we learn about them? What is important for middle school students to understand as they prepare for high school mathematics? What are the advantages and challenges to moving students beyond linear representations? Come join us as we explore activities and tasks using concrete patterns, multiple representations, interactive tools, and ways to assist students as they develop their understanding of functions and functional relationships.

This workshop is appropriate for teachers of 5th grade through high school, paying particular attention to the transition to high school mathematics.

(Activities will be different from last year’s workshop, so teachers who attended last year should still consider attending this year’s workshop.)

**NOTE: Participants will be expected to take a task back to their classrooms, collect and analyze student work, and share their reflections with the CRR.
