National Park Service: Ranger-led Hike – Ranger Cabin

In response to rampant looting, and the destruction of Walnut Canyon’s cliff dwellings, a United States Forest (USFS) ranger was assigned to Walnut Canyon to preserve the park’s resources. Beginning in 1904, the assigned ranger lived in what is today known as Ranger Cabin, which is one of the oldest USFS cabins in the country. Join a ranger for a hike out to ranger cabin, learn about the park’s rich and complicated history, view the cabin, and see the newly furnished interior.

The hike is a 2 miles round trip. The trail is relatively flat, but is rocky and uneven. There is very limited shade on the trail to Ranger Cabin. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, wear sun protection, bring plenty of water, and dress in layers.

Ranger Cabin is within the closed backcountry of Walnut Canyon National Monument, and is only accessible through a ranger guided tour.
