National Park Service: Walnut Canyon Ranger-Led Hike

Explore some of the most sensitive and awe-inspiring locations within Walnut Canyon National Monument—areas that are not accessible to the public outside of these special programs.

During the 2025 season, our knowledgeable park rangers will guide you along the historic Ledge Trail and take you to the historic Ranger Cabin, the second oldest USFS cabin in the country. This is a unique chance to immerse yourself in the rich history and stunning landscapes of Walnut Canyon.

For any general questions about these hikes, please call us at (928) 526-3367.

Ranger Ledge Hike – Pre-registration is Required

Navigate an unmaintained path that leads past remarkable Native American cliff dwellings dating back to 1100 – 1250 CE. Because of the sensitive nature of these sites and their cultural significance, this hike is limited to just 5 participants, ensuring respectful exploration. Reservations are required, these programs tend to fill up quickly. To inquire about available spots on the Ledge Hike, please call the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center at (928) 526-3367.

Know Before You Go:

  • The Ledge Hike traverses an unmaintained path within Walnut Canyon National Monument, featuring steep drop-offs, no handrails, and uneven footing in certain areas.
  • This hike is not suitable for young children or individuals who have difficulty hiking in challenging conditions.
  • The hike spans approximately 1.5 miles round-trip and will take around 1.5 to 2 hours, descending 185 feet into Walnut Canyon and concluding with a 185-foot ascent out via 273 stairsteps.
