Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Fitness Hike on Malpais Trail

Ranger Nikki will lead you moderate to difficult hike to enjoy desert views and see plants and animals that live along the wash. The route follows Hedgehog, San Tan and Malpais Trails for an 8.8-mile balloon loop. The terrain varies from mostly level to portions that are uneven and rocky. Malpais Trail includes deep sand for approximately 2 miles and has 202 feet of elevation change overall. Hiking poles are recommended for the sand and the distance. This hike is focused on exercise but we will stop for breaks and talk about nearby plants and animals. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring snacks and plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.

Limit 20 participants. To register, please call the San Tan Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 7 with your name, phone number and number attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list.   Registration for this program will close on Tuesday, January 2.
