This article is part of a year-long blog series, Partner Profiles: Bringing the AZ STEM Ecosystem to Life. We’ll be highlighting the organizations statewide that build bridges and create connections to unite a wide array of STEM-focused industries.
As a long-standing partner in Arizona’s STEM Ecosystem, Glendale Community College (GCC) is helping shape the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and workforce-ready professionals. With programs rooted in hands-on learning, industry collaboration, and equitable access, GCC continues to open doors for students across the Valley and beyond.
Preparing Students for a STEM-Driven Future
GCC’s mission centers on preparing students for higher education, employment, and active participation in a global society. STEM sits at the heart of that mission.
Through accessible, high-quality instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, GCC equips students with the analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills needed to thrive in evolving industries. Students gain experience through rigorous coursework, labs, undergraduate research, and partnerships with local employers and universities, building a strong foundation for transfer, career entry, or a
dvanced study.
Programs Making an Impact
Biotechnology Research Program
GCC’s Biotechnology program gives students early access to advanced equipment and techniques often reserved for university upperclassmen. Students develop skills in cell and tissue culture, DNA analysis, molecular cloning, PCR, and protein isolation.
The program culminates in a two-semester independent research experience held in GCC’s state-of-the-art labs or through internships with partners such as TGen, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Skysong Innovations. Students frequently present their research at regional and national scientific meetings, and the GCC Library maintains a digital archive showcasing their work.
Cybersecurity Paid Internship Program
Through the AAS in Information Security, students can apply for paid internships in the Gaucho Security Operations Center (GSOC), a fully operational center monitoring cyber threats for local municipal clients who need additional support.
Interns gain real-world experience detecting and reporting threats, while GSOC helps strengthen Arizona’s cybersecurity ecosystem by building talent pipelines and supporting regional partners.
Sustainability 2+2 Program with the University of Arizona
GCC partners with the University of Arizona to offer a seamless 2+2 transfer pathway for students pursuing environmental science. Students complete foundational coursework at GCC before transferring into specialties such as water resources, plant science, soil science, and climate studies.
Graduates move into careers including wildlife biology, water quality management, environmental health, horticulture, and more—fields that are increasingly vital to Arizona’s future.
STEM Connect Center
The STEM Connect Center serves as a centralized hub for advising, tutoring, student development programs, and peer connection. By bringing support services together, GCC improves persistence, graduation, and transfer rates for STEM students while creating a welcoming, collaborative space to study and engage.
STEM’s Role in Strengthening Communities
GCC sees STEM as a driving force behind community wellbeing and regional growth. STEM skills help solve local issues—from water quality and public health to transportation and sustainability—while powering high-demand fields like biotech, cybersecurity, renewable energy, and healthcare. By expanding STEM education, GCC helps cultivate a strong workforce and positions Arizona as a competitive, innovation-driven state.
Commitment to Rural and Underrepresented Communities
GCC emphasizes the importance of expanding STEM access for rural and underrepresented communities, including students from historically marginalized ethnic backgrounds. Supporting these students promotes equity, broadens perspectives in scientific problem-solving, and helps address workforce shortages in critical fields. It also strengthens local economies by offering pathways to high-skill, high-wage careers.
Upcoming Highlight: STEM Connect Spring Fling
April 1 | 11 AM–2 PM
GCC will host its annual STEM Connect Spring Fling—an outdoor celebration featuring student research, STEM activities, community partners, music, prizes, and hands-on fun. The event is free and open to both campus and community members.
Engaging in Arizona’s STEM Ecosystem
GCC plays an active role in Arizona’s STEM Ecosystem by hosting and supporting SciTech Institute programs in the West Valley. The college provides meeting space and program support for the Chief Science Officers Program and collaborates on regional events such as the West Valley GGIT (Go Get IT, formerly Girls Get IT). This co-managed event, in partnership with Estrella Mountain Community College, will be hosted at GCC on Friday, February 27.
