Common Sense Media: Navigating Health Advice Online

Common Sense Media: Navigating Health Advice Online
When does looking up health information stop being helpful and start getting in the way of your well-being?

Looking up a symptom online is one of the most normal things a person can do, and a lot of the time it helps. But the same search can quietly tip from “what could this be?” into “I already know what’s wrong,” and that’s where it starts to backfire. In this lesson, students follow two people whose ordinary health searches get away from them, and learn to catch the moment when curiosity turns into certainty—and know what to do when it does.

Objectives

  • Identify the difference between gathering information and jumping to conclusions when researching health online
  • Describe how online health searches can lead to self-diagnosis, self-medication, and avoiding care
  • Explain when it’s time to stop searching and bring a health question to someone you trust
