Common Sense Media: How Does AI Learn?
Students encounter AI everywhere. It shapes the things they see, hear, and learn online. But most students don’t have a mental model for how these systems actually work. In this lesson, students train their own image recognition model to see how the data an AI learns from shapes what it can do, and how well it can do it.
Objectives
- Explain how an AI system learns from training data
- Explain how the amount and variety of training data affect what an AI system can do
- Connect at least one AI experience from their own life to the training data that likely powers it
Common Sense Media’s Digital Literacy & Well-Being curriculum gives Grades 9 – 12 teachers a free, research-backed framework for building students’ digital literacy skills.
