Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Spring Ecosystems – Baseflow Sources of the Verde River
Dr. Larry Stevens, director of the Springs Stewardship Institute in Flagstaff, will present SSI’s recent findings on the distribution, ecological condition, and peculiar species associated with headwater springs of the Verde River. The basin’s more than 850 springs provide critical baseflow of the Verde River, but have largely been ignored as ecosystems. With support from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, and through collaboration with Friends of the Verde, SSI inventoried 34 springs throughout the basin. Dr. Stevens will report on general findings and several significant surprises that emerged from SSI’s research of Verde River basin springs in 2023.
