Yavapai County Free Library District: Star Talks – Finding Other Worlds

October 1, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free
In this month’s Star Talks, explore current methods for exoplanet detection, with particular emphasis on radial velocity measurements using the EXtreme PREcision Spectrograph (EXPRES) at the 4.3-m Lowell Discovery Telescope.

EXPRES achieves unprecedented precision in detecting the tiny gravitational wobbles that Earth-sized planets induce in their host stars, pushing the boundaries of what was previously detectable.

Dr. Joe Llama is an Astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. Born in Wales he received his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from University of St. Andrews in Scotland. His research interests focus on solar systems throughout our galaxy and their potential for habitability. His current projects include the detection and characterization of Earth-like exoplanets around nearby stars. Star Talks are held in partnership with Prescott Astronomy Club and presented with funding from Friends of the Prescott Public Library.
