In the Black Hills Range, Mingus’ summit is the second highest at more than 4,000 Ft..  Birds we have encountered include the Steller’s Jay, Pygmy Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Hermit Thrush, Olive Warbler, Red Crossbill, many wood-warblers such as Virginia’s, Grace’s, Townsend’s, Hermit, Red-faced, and the celebrated Painted Redstart.

Some grades are wide and gentle, others can be narrow and steep.  We rate it at a 3, but you need to have stable footing for this trip.  We will make multiple stops, one of which might include 2.4 miles on foot round trip.  Also, please check the weather and dress accordingly.

Close proximity to the Verde, Oak Creek, Sycamore Creek, and other perennial waters offers a wide selection of guided tours, hikes, and workshops in one of Arizona’s richest birding habitats.

Our experienced guides have extensive knowledge of birds and the unique habitat that makes this region special. The festival, presented each April by Friends of the Verde River, is a purpose-driven community benefit organization and 501(c) 3 non-profit working to preserve one of the last perennial flowing rivers in the American Southwest.
