Tucson Herpetological Society: Toad in the Road – Biocultural History and Conservation Challenges of the Sonoran Desert Toad
THS President, Robert Villa, will talk about the Sonoran Desert Toad (Incilius alvarius), and the projects THS has funded to understand its conservation needs. The psychedelic demand for this toad grew after a television show, Hamilton’s Pharmacopeia, documented its psychedelic use in 2017. Robert will go into this unusual story, debunk some myths, and present what little we know about this species.
Robert is a lifelong Tucsonan in love with the Sonoran Desert region. He has worked on various projects in and about the region, from species monitoring and biodiversity in the Sky Island Archipelago in Sonora, to film and art projects. He had the honor of consulting for the BBC’s Green Planet, Deserts episode (meeting Sir David Attenborough); and Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson’s Sonoran Quipu installation for artist-activist Cecilia Vicuña.
