The University of Arizona: Celebrating the Transformative Power of Photography
February 21, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Free
Sam Minkler will share his journey as a photographer and how his Diné culture has impacted how he perceives and documents the world, as well as how his style has been influenced by the demands of the larger world. He states that this process—the evolution of vision and artistic expression—is not exclusive to one culture but resonates universally among visual artists worldwide. He will discuss how the role of a visual artist and photographer extends beyond the realms of personal expression to influence the visual landscape of society. He feels that photography serves as a powerful tool, illustrating personal choices, particularly for Native Americans, and plays a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change. He sees photography as a vital instrument for social change—holding within it the capacity to contribute to both cultural heritage and the urgent issues of our time.
Sam Minkler is an associate professor of photography in the School of Communications at Northern Arizona University. His perspective is grounded in Diné traditions and culture, while also influenced by the issues of modern society. He has a passion for teaching, creative expression, and scholarly pursuits.
This talk is presented in conjunction with Arizona State Museum’s exhibit, Light Handlers: Indigenous Photographers in the Southwest, on display February 21 – July 20, 2024.
