The University of Arizona: Caretakers of the Land

November 13, 2024 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Speaker

Jacelle Ramon-Sauberan, Tohono O’odham CC / Kitt Peak National Observatory

When

3 to 4 p.m., Nov. 13, 2024

Where

Jacelle Ramon-Sauberan is the Tohono O’odham Education Development Liaison for Kitt Peak National Observatory, an adjunct professor at Tohono O’odham Community College, and a community member and future allottee of the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Farming has been practiced along the Santa Cruz River by the Tohono O’odham in San Xavier since time immemorial. Colonial development around Tucson dried the river and tried to privatize the land, but in recent years the community has led legal and cultural battles that have resulted in a resurgence of traditional farming and ecological restoration.

This event will be held in-person in ENR2 Room S107.
