[Grades 9-12] Building and Defending Mathematical Arguments
In this interactive IMPACTS workshop, participants will explore what it takes to move students from simply finding an answer to building and defending a mathematical argument. Across several areas of high school mathematics, teachers will engage in tasks that require them to make decisions, identify appropriate evidence, justify relationships, and communicate reasoning clearly.
A featured focus will be a reasoning routine with opportunities to experience how argumentation can develop in different mathematical contexts. Throughout the workshop, we will consider what counts as convincing mathematical evidence, how informal reasoning can grow toward more formal justification, and what teacher moves help students take greater ownership of explaining why something is true.
Teachers will leave with adaptable routines, tasks, and strategies for creating classrooms in which justification is not something students do only during a proof unit. It is part of doing mathematics.
* In-Person participants are invited to come 15 minutes early and enjoy a continental breakfast.
Presenters: Gretchen Stickney, Shanna Gray, Corinne Tresvik, and Elliot Beck
Location: In-person at UArizona Tucson Campus.
