Natural History Institute: Red Rock Country Uncovered – Exploring Sedona’s Red Rock State Park

March 29, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

$65.00

In this field excursion, we will explore the geology and ecology of Red Rock State Park in Sedona.

Did you know that Sedona was once coastal property when Earth’s continents formed the supercontinent Pangaea? Step back in time to 280 million years ago and explore the breathtaking Red Rock State Park, where ancient geological stories come to life. As you visit this awe-inspiring park, you’ll discover a rich history of ancestral mountain deposits, an ancient sea, and coastal dunes, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Mogollon Rim. Over millions of years, erosion has carved away more than four miles of rock, leaving behind the iconic red rock formations that define Sedona today. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable adventure through time and nature!

Join NHI for a trip to Red Rock State Park to enjoy the views of iron-rich rock formations and explore the lush riparian habitat of Oak Creek. Learn about the park’s geology with geologists Jan Schultz and Jeff Meyer and explore the plant life with NHI’s Program Director, Jennie Tutone.
