Mission Garden: Tasting History – Quince

Tasting History is an interactive, drop-in, family friendly program. Learn more about Tucson through the people and plants that shape our home.

This month, we are celebrating quince! Quinces (membrillos in Spanish) were most likely first introduced into the Tucson Basin by Spanish missionaries at the end of the 17th century. They flourished here and became an integral part of rural orchards and urban backyards. A historic neighborhood downtown was even named Barrio Membrillo for the quince that grew there, between Simpson Street and Granada and between the Interstate-10 frontage road and the former Southwestern Railroad tracks. Read more about quince in Mission Garden.
