McDowell Sonoran Conservancy: Ride the Maricopa Trail

Difficulty Level: This route is best for advanced beginner to intermediate riders. We will ride at a moderate pace – good cardio is necessary as well as the ability to ride up or down steeper pitches. All our rides are “No Drop” meaning no rider will be left behind the group.

Distance & Elevation Gain: This will be 16.5 miles and 760 feet of elevation gain. Expect a 3 hour ride at a moderate pace (appx 8-9 mph average speed at Browns).

Ride Overview: The Maricopa Trail is a 315-mile recreational trail that circles the entire Phoenix metro area. The Maricopa connects all nine of the regional parks and travels over 20 miles through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

This ride will cover the Brown’s Ranch portion of the Maricopa Trail going north from Fraesfield trailhead, with the return route through the heart of the Preserve back to Fraesfield. We will stop periodically for some interesting history and stories about the Maricopa Trail.

Mountain Bike Event Requirements: Helmets are mandatory for all bike events. A mountain bike with wide knobby tires is required – please, no road bikes, hybrids, or folding bikes. Your bike must be in good working order – please check the tires, brakes, chain and general functionality before leaving home.

E-bikes are allowed. You are expected to ride at the group speed and be cautious about passing or encountering others on the trails.

What to Bring: A backpack with 2-3 liters of water, spare tubes and tools plus energy snacks. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. It’s always smart to have a paper map or mapping app in case you get separated from the group.

Arrive 15 minutes before start of the ride for check-in and a brief bike inspection.
