Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Welcome to the Sonoran Desert

This introduction to the Sonoran Desert is perfect for residents and visitors alike. Join Ranger Kevin for a 2-mile hike on the Spur Cross and Mariposa Hill trails. Trails are rated moderate, so expect stretches of loose rock, uneven terrain and a small degree of elevation change. We’ll be talking about what makes our desert quite possibly the most biodiverse desert on Earth. We’ll also be stopping to observe various plants and animals along the way, and dive into the amazing adaptations these desert dwellers have developed that allow them to thrive here. Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms are available near the trailhead, but there is no drinking water available within the conservation area. NO pets, please.

MEETING LOCATION: Spur Cross trailhead (by covered picnic tables)

Please note: Entry to Spur Cross Conservation Area is $3 per person. Cash only is accepted, and exact change is appreciated. If entry station is closed, please place your money in the payment box at the gate.

Limit 20 participants. To register, please call the Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 6 with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list.   Registration for this program will close on 1/14/25.
