Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Native Plant Hike

April 19, 2025 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free with Park Fee
Join Ranger Kevin for an informative hike about the native plants that call the Sonoran Desert home.

April is Native Plant Month, and we are excited to give our native plants a little love. Come along and find out what makes our cactus, tree and shrub species so special. Plus, we’ll talk about why using native plants in your front/backyard landscape is a great idea. We’ll hike about 7.8 miles in total, and trails are rated moderate-difficult, with stretches of deep sand, loose rock, and uneven terrain.

Note: Please know your fitness level. If you’re not accustomed to hikes of this length or intensity, work up to this one by doing some of our shorter hikes. Please bring plenty of water (minimum three liters recommended), electrolytes, snacks, and wear sturdy, closed-toed footwear. Proper clothing (layers), sunscreen, and hat are strongly recommended. Trekking poles may be useful. Restrooms and water are not available at the trailhead. NO pets, please.
MEETING LOCATION: Rock Peak Wash Trailhead at the south end of the park; see map here: https://www.maricopacountyparks.net/assets/1/6/san-tan-8×11.pdf

Restrooms are NOT available at the trailhead, but are available at the Nature Center about a 10-minute drive away. Self-pay envelopes are available at the trailhead ($7 per vehicle); please bring cash! Maricopa County Parks annual passes also accepted (place hangtag on rearview mirror).

Limit 12 participants. To register, please call the Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 7. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 4/17.
