Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Morning Hike and Saguaro Census

May 30, 2024 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 am

Free with Park Fee

Join Ranger Kevin for a 2.4-mile hike on the Cottonwood trail amidst the desert’s late spring beauty. The trail is rated easy-moderate, which means there may be stretches of loose rock, uneven terrain and elevation change. While out on the trail, we will learn about the ongoing project to catalog the Sonoran Desert’s amazing saguaro cacti. We will be surveying our local population for signs of stress and submitting our observations using the iNaturalist app (participants are encouraged to download the app prior to arriving at the park; there is no wifi, and signal strength is unreliable in most parts of the park). We’ll also be on the lookout for late spring wildflowers as well as blooming shrubs and trees. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. Hats, clothes appropriate to the terrain and weather, and sunscreen are highly recommended. Restrooms can be found near the trailhead. No water is available at the trailhead. NO pets please.

MEETING LOCATION: Cottonwood Day Use Area (Can only be reached via the park’s north entry station)

Limit 20 participants. To register, please email Ranger Kevin at Kevin.Thorson@maricopa.gov
with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please email back ASAP so those on the waiting list may be contacted. Registration for this program will close on 5/28/24.
