Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Life Along the Gila

November 17, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

National Take a Hike Day is celebrated each year on November 17 in recognition of the National Trails System Act of 1968. This Act designated a series of scenic, historic and recreation trails in both backcountry and urban areas in an effort to provide outdoor opportunities for the public. Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department encourages you to connect with nature on a ranger-led hike, on this day or any day, to explore and learn about our beautiful Sonoran Desert.

To ensure everyone can enjoy this nationally recognized day, the regular day-use entry fee for all of Maricopa County’s regional parks will be waived on November 17.

The Gila River has a storied past, a tenuous present, and perhaps a hopeful future. We’ll discuss the importance of rivers like the Gila to the health and diversity of desert life as we explore the riparian habitat for interesting plants and animals. The trail is approximately 2 miles and rated as moderately difficult, with stretches of loose rock, deep and sandy soil, and large rocks and other obstacles. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center, but not at the trailhead. NO pets, please.
