Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Guided Bird Hike

February 17, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Free with Park Fee

Join Ranger Eric for a 1.8-mile roundtrip hike in Rock Peak Wash at the south end of the park to look for resident and wintering birds.

Along the way, we will learn identification tips and about their ecology in the Sonoran Desert. We will also discuss citizen science, including the eBird app. Today is also part of the Great Backyard Bird Count sponsored by Cornell, which runs Feb. 16-19 this year (https://www.birdcount.org/). Please bring your own binoculars if you have them, but the ranger may have extras to borrow. Please dress in layers, wear protective clothing and/or sunscreen, wear sturdy footwear, and carry ample water. Early spring wildflowers may be in bloom, depending on how much winter precipitation the area gets.

MEETING LOCATION: Rock Peak Wash Trailhead at the south end of the park; see map here: https://www.maricopacountyparks.net/assets/1/6/san-tan-8×11.pdf

Restrooms are NOT available at the trailhead, but are available at the Nature Center. Self-pay envelopes are available at the trailhead ($7 per vehicle); please bring cash! Maricopa County Parks annual passes also accepted (place hangtag on rearview mirror).

Limit 10 participants. To register, please call the Nature Center at 602-506-2930 ext. 7 with your name, phone number and number attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list.
