Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Desert Edible Plant Hike

September 22, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Free with Park Fee
Spend the morning hiking through the park with Ranger Derik as you learn about the bounty provided by the Sonoran Desert, the edible plants that can be found and about the native peoples that first harvested them.

The hike will follow sections of the Overton, Clay Mine and Go John trails for 2 miles and with less that 200ft of elevation gain. During the hike you will learn to identify native edible and medicinal plants that are found in abundance in the park and about the Hohokam people that mastered the art of survival in Sonoran Desert through foraging and farming. Hikers are encouraged to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes for the hike. Water and bathrooms can be found at the Nature center.

MEETING LOCATION: Overton trailhead to the left of the nature center Limit 20 participants.

To register, please call the Nature Center (602) 506-2930 ext. 8 with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 9/20/24. Please note: Summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website is the best resource for verifying the program’s current status, so please check the program listing prior to departing for your scheduled program.
