Friends of the Huachuca Mountains: Carr Canyon Pioneers

Friends of the Huachuca Mountains unofficial historian and one of the founders of FOHM, Rosemary Snapp, has been researching the early settlers in Carr Canyon since she and her husband, Ralph, moved to the canyon in 1994.

From the canyon’s namesake, James Edward Carr, who ran a sawmill in the canyon and established a toll road to it, to the last owners of the property that is now part of the Coronado National Forest, John and Ila Healy, you’ll learn the fascinating stories of the Todd, Sampson, and Haverty families, world famous botanist Charles Biederman, and Virginia Moson and Cicero Martin, who built the stone building now known as Carr House in 1934. There is a lot of history packed into our favorite canyon. Come and learn about it! After Rosemary’s presentation, Carr House Host Mike Foster will lead an optional walk to the ruins in the meadow below Carr House.

All are invited to attend our summer program of presentations on the natural and cultural history of the Huachuca Mountains and environs. These presentations are offered free of charge at the Carr House.
