Four TEDx-style talks from local scientists, artists, and educators. In each 15-minute talk, the speakers will share what drives their enthusiasm for their field of study.
The first talk starts at 6:30 and doors open at 6:00. Beer and wine are available for sale with proceeds benefiting Coconino Center for the Arts.
Robert Long, Artist Join Robert Long for a showcase of his detailed nature illustration, created under the pen name, NearsightGraphite. Highlighting his process, he’ll discuss the power of the observer and the illustrator’s role as a distiller of torrents of visual data. Robert’s artwork amplifies intimate, obscure forms of life to give underrepresented organisms louder voices and to visualize their self-worlds. He aims to inspire curiosity in the intricacies of the natural world, and by extension, promote nature conservation.
Inès Montaño, Quantum Scientist Dr. Inès Montaño, Associate Professor and Interim Chair of the Department for Applied Physics and Material Science at NAU, is fascinated by quantum science. In her talk, she will discuss how things that sound like science fiction are indeed real, are already shaping our world today, and how we are actually still at the very beginning of this next technological revolution which has the potential to fundamentally change all of our lives.
John Taylor, Terra BIRDS Nature is our best teacher, and yet school grounds in America do not typically include much wildness, nor are gardens a standard. Flagstaff non-profit Terra BIRDS joins a national movement to invite nature into the daily school experience and leads students and teachers as stewards of their school grounds. Hear from John Taylor on why we want ‘Green Schoolyards’ and how do we create and sustain them?

The Flagstaff Festival of Science is pleased to present “The Mammoth World of Science” September 22- October 1, 2023! The Festival features 10-days of engaging events and programs, all free, for the community to enjoy and celebrate the wonders of science!
This year’s theme has been designed to showcase the fascinating research and scientific discovery of Beth Shapiro, PhD.
The Festival offers a wide variety of presentations, hands-on workshops, interactive discussions, classroom talks and guided tours led by outstanding Flagstaff scientists and STEAM professionals. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to learn about ancient cultures, the environment of the Colorado Plateau, wildlife, astronomy and biology, as well as many topics at the intersection of the sciences and the arts.
Festival events highlight the innovative research happening right here in Flagstaff! Events are held in a variety of venues and institutions throughout northern Arizona.
