Chandler Public Library: The Nature of Things – What’s Happening to Our Urban Saguaro Cacti?

April 20, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

Are we witnessing the decline of our beloved saguaros?

Despite their reputation for resilience in harsh environments, Arizona’s recurring heat waves and extreme droughts can subject these iconic cacti to significant stress and even death. In recent years, residents of the Phoenix Valley have witnessed a troubling increase in saguaro damage and mortality in urban areas. Could it be that Arizona is losing its iconic saguaro cacti in our desert urban spaces?

Join Tania Hernandez, Research Scientist at the Desert Botanical Garden, as she discusses the the Saguaro Initiatives, including the Saguaro Census. Discover how you can contribute to the Garden’s efforts to better understand and safeguard our desert’s cherished symbol.

Registration is appreciated but drop-ins are welcome!

Before or after the program, make sure to discover all the activities and displays available at the Earth Day Celebration at the Nature Center, which runs 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This program is brought to you by Chandler Nature Center and Chandler Library. The Nature of Things is a conversation series featuring contemporary topics in science, conservation and the natural world around us. If you are interested in local ecosystems, as well as Arizona’s cultural and natural heritage, this speaker series is for you!
