Bright Side Bookshop: The Slickrock Desert with Steve Hinch

September 7, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Please join local author Steve Hinch on Thursday, September 7th at 6:00 PM for a slideshow presentation and reading of his award-winning book, The Slickrock Desert: Journeys of Discovery in an Endangered American Wilderness. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

THE SLICKROCK DESERT is the story of a land unlike any other on earth. Come with author Stephen W. Hinch as he explores the mesas and the canyons of the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest-the Slickrock Desert. Along the way you will discover its history, natural history, geology, ecology, and what we know of its earliest inhabitants. And you will revel in its beauty in a series of inspiring photographs. But all is not well in this magnificent land. You will also learn of the threats from those who would destroy it forever for short-term gain, and of the work being done by dedicated individuals and groups to protect it. It is a story every lover of the American wilderness needs to know.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged: please RSVP here.

Stephen W. Hinch is the author of The Slickrock Desert: Journeys of Discovery in an Endangered American Wilderness. This past May, the publishing industry’s largest international trade association, IBPA, named The Slickrock Desert winner of a 2023 Benjamin Franklin Silver Award for being one of the year’s three best books in the category of Regional Nonfiction.

Steve has explored the lands of the American Southwest for forty years, either on solo hikes into remote areas or with like-minded photographers on multi-day expeditions. A recognized expert on the use of GPS in the wilderness, his book, Outdoor Navigation with GPS, now in its third edition, is a bestselling guide to the subject. He is the author of five books and a contributing author to three more. Trained as an electrical engineer, he earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees from Harvey Mudd College and holds three patents in telecommunications technologies. Steve lives in Santa Rosa, California. He claims his expeditions into the Slickrock Desert have been a necessary counterpoint to his life as a senior executive in the high-technology industry.
