Lowell Observatory: Spiders and the Discovery of Pluto with Todd Gonzales

October 30 @ 7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

Free with Admission

This talk explores the surprising connection between arachnology and astronomy. Black widow spider silk is prized for being stronger than steel, yet more resilient than the wire and thread available during World War II. That same silk was used in the crosshairs of the astrograph at Lowell Observatory, the instrument that led to the discovery of Pluto. Along the way, the talk also examines the science and psychology behind arachnophobia, and how anthropomorphism shapes our relationship with creatures beyond our own. Happy Halloween!

The Worlds Revealed Speaker Series invites diverse staff and experts to share their unique perspectives, bridging the gap between science, art, and exploration. Learn about exciting topics like the intersection of music and astronomy, the operations behind our world-class telescopes, or unexpected connections like animals and stars, Worlds Revealed offers a captivating inside look at the ideas and stories that inspire wonder and shape our understanding of the cosmos.

This program is included with General Admission.
