[Grades 9-12] Seeing Structure Across Representations (IMPACTS-HS)

In this interactive IMPACTS workshop, participants will explore how multiple representations can help students notice mathematical structure, make connections, and build conceptual understanding. Teachers will engage in hands-on and investigative tasks that move among concrete, visual, graphical, and symbolic representations, with particular attention to how different representations reveal different features of the mathematics.

Quadratic relationships will provide one rich context for this work, including the use of algebra tiles to develop a conceptual understanding of completing the square. Participants will also examine additional high school topics through tasks that emphasize noticing, explaining, generalizing, and connecting ideas rather than simply applying procedures. Throughout the workshop, we will consider how thoughtful task design and representation choices can help students become more flexible mathematical thinkers and better understand why mathematical relationships work.

* In-Person participants are invited to come 15 minutes early and enjoy a continental breakfast.
