What’s in a name? More importantly, how do you communicate the who, what, where, how, and why of a thing if this thing does not itself have a name? In this talk, we explore the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defense as a global communications challenge. Asteroid Apophis will fly by Earth in 2029, and will be celebrated by cultures and nations all over the world, giving astronomers, communicators, and space enthusiasts the opportunity to find a common language in the cosmos. Or maybe a not-so common language? Come find out!
Dr. Lori Pigue earned her PhD in Astronomy and Planetary Science in 2023 from NAU. She is a Physical Scientist with Astrogeology department at USGS, focusing mostly in Lunar Volcanology, In Situ Resource Utilization, and Planetary Defense. Outside of Lori’s research, she manages their Communications Team working in outreach, social media, and press, and engage in a variety of community engagement activities to encourage youth to see science for the fun and curious field it can be.
