Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: America 250 – Starry Nights and Striped Scorpions

August 7 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free with Park Fee

Celebrate our America’s 250 milestone by exploring the desert after dark! Join Ranger Jacque for a family-friendly night hike in search of the striped-tail and giant hairy scorpions – resilient residents that have called the Sonoran Desert home since long before our country’s founding.

This nighttime adventure begins outside the Nature Center, where restrooms and water fountains are available. The program starts with a 15-minute overview on scorpion identification and behavior before we head out in search of these fascinating arachnids.

We’ll walk up to 1.3 miles towards the Jasper Loop; don’t forget to bring your UV lights to spot glowing scorpions along the way, as well as a flashlight to light the path. Be prepared for an hour and a half outdoors—wear closed-toe shoes, bring a water bottle, and dress appropriately. Don’t forget the $10 exact change admission for the self-pay station upon entry.

MEETING LOCATION: Nature Center

Limit 20 participants. To register, please call the Cave Creek Nature Center at 602-506-2930 ext. 8 and provide your name, phone number, and total number of people in your party. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call back ASAP so those on the waiting list may be contacted. Registration for this program will close on 08/05/26.

PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor programs may be canceled or shortened on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park.
