Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Saguaro Walk
June 19 @ 7:30 am - 8:30 am
Free with Park Fee
Enjoy an easy-paced hike among the saguaros and meet the park’s mega rock star, the uniquely shaped and much-loved “Michelin Man”. Learn facts (and even fiction!) about these fascinating plants and see them at various points in their life cycle – from short columns hiding under a nurse plant to many-armed giants to fallen skeletons – and all the beneficial things they provide in between. Discover how this keystone species has garnered federal and state recognition and protection, as well as worldwide adoration. The route uses a portion of Slate Trail and returns via Jasper Trail to the parking lot.
(There is an indoor saguaro presentation at the nature center following this walk.) The terrain ranges from level to uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot. The total distance is approximately 1.3 miles. Wear closed-toe shoes, a hat and sun-protective clothing. Bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the trailhead.
