Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Desert 101 Hike

January 25 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free with Park Fee
Get an introduction to the plants, animals and history of our beautiful Sonoran Desert on this hike with Ranger Nikki.

Are you new to Arizona or a longtime resident looking to learn about the unique environment you pass by every day? Ranger Nikki will lead this “walk n’ talk” to observe birds, insects, mammals, trees, cacti, rocks and more and share the story of their important place in our desert ecosystem. The route uses Overton Trail from the Nature Center and travels on Clay Mine, a downhill section of GO John, Jasper and Slate Trails back to the Nature Center, for 2 miles total. The terrain is mostly uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot, but does have some areas that are level. There is moderate amount of elevation gain at the start going up Overton to reach Clay Mine Trail. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.
