Red Mountain Park at Mallard Ramada- 9a to 1p
Park Ranger habitat building events are an opportunity to create aquatic habitat structures and rejuvenate natural spaces in the park for wildlife to flourish. Specific projects will vary but in the past have included building PVC structures to sink in the community fishing waters for fish habitat, lake bank cleanup of lures and discarded fishing line, and construction of duck houses.
Fish habitats provide shade and shelter for stocked fish, spawning beds for eggs to safely mature, and substrate for aquatic organisms to grow on, promoting biodiversity up the food chain. These have been made with recycled materials and premade kits, including Georgia Cubes, spider blocks, spawning kits, brush reefs, bucket trees and Safe Havens.
All ages are welcome at the event but we recommend participants be ages 5 and up to ensure that directions for safety will be followed.
The Park Rangers will provide the following: all required tools, project materials, extra drinking water, and building instructions.
Please bring: sturdy shoes for outdoor and uneven terrain, water bottles, sun screen and work gloves if desired.
Habitat projects will vary, but may include sawing, drilling, assembling PVC structures, and carrying bulky objects. All aspects of the construction are optional – we want participants to feel safe and included, and practice “challenge by choice,” encouraging participants to try new activities respectfully and free of peer pressure.
If you cannot attend for the full event we still welcome the public to stop by and learn about the activity anytime until its conclusion.
