A naturalist is an interpreter, merging science and art to bring others into closer connection with nature. Join Walt for a leisurely walk on a new trail into the valley of Elisabeth Creek, land recently saved from development thanks in large part to persistent efforts by Save the Dells, the Granite Dells Preservation Foundation, and others. Photographs, paintings, and carefully chosen words were combined to raise awareness and money to accomplish this stunning conservation victory. Walt practices what he calls “informed imagination,” which serves as the source for his creative efforts. He will share aspects of his creative process and tell the ongoing story of efforts to save the iconic Granite Dells.

Walt Anderson is a naturalist, educator, wildlife photographer, painter, and passionate advocate for conservation. He is Professor Emeritus of Environmental Studies at Prescott College where he taught for 27 years and a founder of the nonprofit Granite Dells Preservation Foundation. An expert in the field, he has led natural history and photography tours of domestic and international destinations for over 35 years. His wildlife artwork has been commissioned and displayed by such organizations as Artists for Conservation, Artists and Biologists Unite for Nature, and the Highlands Center for Natural History. “Art in the Service of Conservation” is his second solo exhibition with the Natural History Institute. His writing, illustrations, photography, and paintings have been featured in numerous publications over the years, and he currently publishes a weekly natural history photo essay “Wild Wednesday” on his Facebook page and through email. You can contact him at [email protected] to join his mailing list.
