The University of Arizona: Digging Deep into Geometry Grades 6-9 (IMPACTS-MS)

March 1, 2025 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Geometry is the attempt to understand space, shape, and dimension. Within mathematics, geometry has been a source of great insight into other mathematical domains, such as algebra. Geometry enables students to represent and make sense of the world, analyze and solve problems, and represent abstract symbols pictorially to facilitate understanding. However, students are often asked to memorize geometric properties and formulas rather than to explore the underlying concepts through worthwhile tasks that involve hands-on experiences. Come join us as we explore the expectations for middle grades geometry and how to tailor instruction to provide powerful experiences for students to develop rich geometric understanding.

Presenters: Justin Powell, Kristin Connelly, Rodrigo Gutiérrez

Time: 8:30am-12:30pm

Location: Hybrid: In-person at UArizona Tucson Campus. Remote via Zoom.

Earn: Up to 5 hours of professional development credit for recertification.

**NOTE: Participants will be expected to take a task back to their classrooms, collect and analyze student work, and share their reflections with the CRR.
