SUMMARY:Tohono Chul: Plein Air Painting with Homemade Watercolors w/ Catherine Nash
DESCRIPTION:From earth to watercolors to paper! \nCatherine first observed how to filter pigments from the earth at a historical pigment mill in southern France and has since adapted the process for use in her studio. \nIn this special two-day workshop\, she will demonstrate her filtering process and teach students how to make their own vine charcoal. Using the provided materials\, participants will mull filtered earth pigments and charcoal into a natural watercolor binder made of gum arabic and honey to create their own homemade\, professional quality watercolor paints. With full access to the beautiful grounds of Tohono Chul\, we will paint outside with our own handmade watercolors en plein aire. Taking inspiration from the dramatic light\, color\, and varied textures of the Sonoran Desert. Catherine will teach pertinent\, expressive brushwork and mark making using our watercolors\, varied color drawing media\, ink\, and more. Learn how wonderful the experience of working outdoors can be as we learn to capture quick dynamic studies of nature with fresh and brilliant results! \nWorkshop rates include all of the materials to create a set of three or four homemade watercolor paints. Upon registration\, a simple supply list will be sent to you. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Bring your own lunch and refillable water bottle. Cold sparkling water will be provided for workshop participants! \nAll levels welcome. \nSaturday and Sunday\, November 8th + 9th | 9:00am – 3:00 pm

SUMMARY:Tucson Bird Alliance: Tohono Chul Garden Walk
DESCRIPTION:For out-of-town visitors and those new to the Sonoran Desert\, Tohono Chul’s easy-walking trails and beautiful gardens provide close-up looks at many of the typical birds of the Sonoran Desert.\n\nOf the more than 500 bird species that spend time in Arizona during the year\, 140 are known to have visited Tohono Chul\, and on any given morning you might see up to 15 species here. All year long you can watch our state bird\, the Cactus Wren\, flit from cactus to tree and back again\, chattering as he goes. Observe the Curved-billed Thrasher\, with its saucy two-part whistle\, scrabbling on the ground or nesting in cholla cactus. Enjoy our two year-round resident hummingbird species\, Anna’s and Costa’s\, as they dart about\, feeding among the many colorful flowers. And be sure to look upward for a glimpse at our majestic Cooper’s Hawks\, a pair of which has nested in the gardens for each of the last four years.\n\nMeet at the Tohono Chul Admission Window. Limited to 10 participants.\n\nTohono Chul entrance fee will be waived for trip participants. This program is being offered in partnership with Tohono Chul.\n\nLeader: Ray Deeney\, Carol Massanari\, and rotating Tohono Chul Docent Guides
