SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: The Science of Project Hail Mary
DESCRIPTION:Join our special final STEM speaker series talk of the semester all about the science of Project Hail Mary\, the book and movie by Andy Weir (author of the Martian). We will explore where the story gets the science right\, where it takes liberties\, and where it goes full technobabble. This talk features heavy plot spoilers so we suggest reading or watching the story beforehand. \nThis talk is presented in collaboration with the SCC Book Club and SCC Film Club. SCC students and employees can also join for special book club discussions and a film screening earlier in April. For more information visit SCC Library Book Club.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: Worlds Without End
DESCRIPTION:Since the initial discovery in 1995\, astronomers have detected over 6000 exoplanets. Several hundred are Earth-like and potentially habitable\, projecting to ten billion across the Milky Way. The talk will summarize the search for life in the universe\, starting with the Solar System\, and moving to the larger regions of space\, where there is at least one planet for every star in the galaxy. The first detection of life beyond Earth is finally within reach. \nChris Impey is a University Distinguished Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona. He has over 450 publications on education\, observational cosmology\, galaxies\, and quasars. Chris Impey is a winner of the American Astronomical Society’s career Education Prize from. He’s also been NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar\, Carnegie Council’s Arizona Professor of the Year\, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor. He has written 120 popular articles on cosmology\, astrobiology and education\, two textbooks\, a novel called Shadow World\, and ten popular science trade books.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: Making Waves: A Marine Biologist's Journey
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lekelia Jenkins\, Associate Professor at Arizona State University\, will share how her early scientific curiosity evolved into a powerful career in marine conservation research. She’ll break down how she blends environmental science\, social science\, and creative communication to tackle major ocean challenges\, and will offer tips on shaping your career path and building a supportive professional community. \nDr. Jenkins is a marine sustainability scientist and ASU professor whose work focuses on how people create and adopt solutions for ocean conservation\, from sustainable fishing gear to renewable energy. She’s also known for using dance as a creative way to communicate science and inspire social change. Her leadership and impact have earned her major honors—including being featured with a life-sized statue in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: STEM Speaker Series Speaker 2 - The Vera C. Rubin Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is located on the summit of Cerro Pachón in Chile. It’s situated in the Atacama Desert\, a region known for its extremely clear skies\, making it an ideal location for astronomical observation. The operations of the telescope are run out of Tucson. This telescope is changing how astronomy is done because in one night\, the images it takes would previously have taken years to acquire. In its first few nights\, it discovered over 2000 new asteroids.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: STEM Speaker Series 3 - Cosmic Feedback: When Black Holes Talk Back
DESCRIPTION:Galaxies\, often referred to as “Cosmic Ecosystems\,” are composed of stars\, gas\, and black holes. The interactions between these components determine how a galaxy evolves as a dynamic system over time. Galactic winds\, driven by active black holes—especially in the dusty cores of colliding galaxies—are believed to play a crucial role in this evolutionary process. This talk will present the latest findings from the James Webb Space Telescope\, showcasing merging galaxies and revealing hidden black holes and star formation. It will also trace the movement of gas across these galactic ecosystems\, addressing the longstanding question: How do galaxies and black holes evolve together? \nThis talk is part of the Shapley Lecture Series and is sponsored by the American Astronomy Society (AAS)\, the SETI Institute\, and the NASA Community College Network. \n\nSpeaker: Dr. Vivian U\nTopic: Cosmic Feedback: When Black Holes Talk Back\nDate: Monday\, April 7\nTime: 3:30 – 4:30 pm\nLocation: SL-116

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: Special STEM Workshop - Journey to becoming a scientist
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that in many scientific fields\, such as physics\, astronomy\, and geology\, schools actually pay you to pursue a PhD? And that many professional scientists skip the master’s degree and go straight to a PhD? \nJoin us for a conversation with Dr. Vivian U\, a visiting speaker\, to learn about the journey to becoming a professional scientist. We’ll explore the rewards and challenges of a scientific career\, discuss what graduate school is like and how it differs from undergraduate studies\, and share tips on finding research opportunities (with pay) while in community college or university. There will be plenty of time for your questions. This event will be hosted by Dr. Carver Bierson from SCC Astronomy. \n\nSpeaker: Dr. Vivian U\nTopic: Journey to becoming a scientist\nDate: Monday\, April 7\nTime: 2 – 3 pm\nLocation: NS-400

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: STEM Speaker Series 1 - Microscopic Crystal Art
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Hendrickson’s fine art photographs of crystals present a uniquely beautiful view of nature. \nThe crystals are first grown through evaporation from a solution and then captured with a high-resolution digital microscope. The resulting images showcase stunning rainbows of color created by the refraction of light through the crystal facets. Each pattern is as delicate\, fleeting\, and unique as a snowflake. Come learn how this is done and view this microscopic crystal art in person. \n\nSpeaker: Lee Hendrickson\nTopic: Microscopic Crystal Art\nDate: Wednesday\, February 12\nTime: 3:30 – 4:30 pm\nLocation: SL-116
