SUMMARY:Museum of Northern Arizona: Collection Center Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the Museum of Northern Arizona collections at our annual Easton Collection Center Open House. This year’s theme is Plants and Pollinators. \n\n\nExplore the intricate relationships between plants\, their pollinators\, and the people who have interacted with them for generations. From fossilized plants to delicate herbarium specimens\, from baskets woven with plant fibers to fine art celebrating the diverse landscapes of the Colorado Plateau—you’ll encounter a rich variety of objects from across our natural sciences\, ethnography\, archaeology\, and fine art collections. \n\n\nMNA curators and staff will be on hand to share stories\, research\, and surprising connections between the natural world and human creativity. Discover how the natural sciences inform our understanding of culture\, history\, and art—and how pollinators help shape ecosystems and inspire generations of artistic expression. \n\n\nThis event complements our current Shifting Life Zones exhibition\, and offers a deeper dive into the Museum’s interdisciplinary approach to understanding and celebrating life on the Colorado Plateau. \n\n\nFree admission. All ages welcome! \n\n\nThe Easton Collection Center is located on the opposite side of Fort Valley Road from the Museum. Coming from central Flagstaff\, turn right at the Harold S. Colton Research Center sign. Go up the short drive to a parking area. The Easton Collection Center is the tall modern sandstone colored building with a sloping living roof.

SUMMARY:BON-Earth: Bug Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Junior Entomology Academy promotes the education of entomology for kids ages 6 – 10 years-old. \n Our mission is to inspire a love of bugs in the next generation of entomologists\, to assist in their education\, and to provide resources for improving their knowledge. We do this primarily through our annual Bug Camps. Our goal is to educate passionate young entomologists on all aspects of entomology\, from keeping a collection\, insect husbandry\, insect classification\, insect ecology\, and eating insects as a food source.  The summer bug camps are administered through our non-profit\, the Biodiversity Outreach Network (BON).    \n \nIf creepy crawlers fascinate your child\, then the summer bug camp is an ideal summer activity. If your child falls outside of this age range please contact us\, we do make exceptions for children who really love working with bugs. Campers will learn about insect natural history and biodiversity through a series of fun projects and activities. Campers collect insects and create their own insect collection\, maintain their own live roach family and we finish the week with by preparing and sharing insect cuisine with invited family members and friends.  \nJune 23th – June 27th (hosted at Museum of Northern AZ (MNA)

SUMMARY:Museum of Northern Arizona: Colton Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Free Colton Garden Tour (weather permitting) \nColton Garden provides a space for people of all ages to learn about plants and reconnect with natural food sources. Located on the site of MNA founder Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton’s World War II Victory Garden the plots and greenhouses are supported by volunteers. \nColton Garden includes several examples of season extenders\, including a hoop house and a passive solar greenhouse built in 1976\, when it was the first of its kind on the Colorado Plateau. Portions of the garden are used to experiment with heirloom and native seeds and Indigenous farming methods. The garden promotes the conservation of important species of pollinators and migratory birds\, through its organic growing methods\, plant diversity and incorporation of native plants. \nThe garden is open to the public during daylight hours\, with a wheelchair accessible path\, benches\, views of the San Francisco Peaks\, and demonstration beds overflowing with flowers and vegetables. \nThe garden is located near the Discovery Village on MNA’s Research Center campus. The best way to reach the garden is to turn onto Winding Brook Road\, which leads to the Peaks Senior Living Community. Park at MNA’s Discovery Village just beyond the stop sign.

SUMMARY:Museum of Northern Arizona: Easton Collection Center Open House
DESCRIPTION:Free admission to the Easton Collection Center — Saturday\, August 24 – 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM \nLearn about the Museum of Northern Arizona’s collections at the Platinum LEED certified\, architectural masterpiece Easton Collection Center. Selected pieces of the Fine Art Collection will be available for viewing and discussion with MNA collections staff and curators. Consisting of approximately 2\,200 works including oil or acrylic paintings\, works on paper (watercolors\, drawings\, sketches\, etchings\, block prints\, and lithographs)\, and sculptures\, the Fine Art collection documents artistic pursuits on the Colorado Plateau. A particular strength is the holdings of Native American works by Indigenous artists important for their individual achievements\, as well as their association\, either as students or faculty\, with the Santa Fe Indian School. The collection also includes contemporary and historically significant works by Anglo-American artists from the late-nineteenth to early-twentieth centuries\, many of whom were among the first to visit and record the landscapes and people of the Colorado Plateau region.
