SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: IBA Survey Workshop - new eBird protocol
DESCRIPTION:The Arizona Important Bird Areas program is launching a streamlined survey protocol utilizing eBird. The surveys will be stationary\, 10 minute counts where all birds seen and heard are added to an eBird checklist. The same locations will be surveyed on every visit to create a dataset over time. Participants will receive a printed protocol document\, we will cover the logistics of such a survey and then do a few survey counts together. Participants need to be prepared to walk about a mile over uneven terrain. \n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. Experience birding during the peak Spring migration season at Dead Horse Ranch State Park on the banks of the Verde River. Close proximity to the Verde\, Oak Creek\, Sycamore Creek\, and other perennial waters offers a wide selection of guided tours\, hikes\, and workshops in one of Arizona’s richest birding habitats. \nOur experienced guides have extensive knowledge of birds and the unique habitat that makes this region special. The festival\, presented each April by Friends of the Verde River\, is a purpose-driven community benefit organization and 501(c) 3 non-profit working to preserve one of the last perennial flowing rivers in the American Southwest. \nFestival site is at Dead Horse Ranch State Park.

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Botanical Walk - Lime Kiln Trail
DESCRIPTION:This plant walk will follow the Limekiln Trail via the Connector Trail from Middle Lagoon\, and heading east out of the State Park boundary into the USFS designated Verde Valley Botanical Area. The Verde Valley Botanical Area was established to help protect the Arizona Cliffrose (Purshia subintegra)\, a federally listed endangered species endemic to central Arizona. The area is dominated by the Verde Formation\, composed of limestone soils and cliffs along the east side of the Verde River. It is also home to a handful of other sensitive endemic plant species that have habitats restricted to the same geological substrate\, such as Mearn’s Sage (Salvia dorrii subsp. mearnsii)\, Rusby’s Milkwort (Polygala rusbyi)\, and Frazier’s Well Buckwheat (Eriogonum ripleyi). The hiking is of moderate difficulty\, and there is little shade except for that provided by scattered Arizona Juniper (Juniperus arizonica) and the dominant Crucifixion Thorn (Canotia holacantha). \nRating: 2 \nTransportation: Self-drive \nMeal: None \nCost: $25 \n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Sedona - Beginner Bird Walk at Sedona Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Here is your chance to learn the basics of birding firsthand. If you’ve never been birding before or you consider yourself a beginner birder\, there’s nothing that can help you more than being with a group of fellow beginners and a good leader. Rich’s enthusiasm and knowledge make this a fun and rewarding experience. You will get binocular basics and learn how to look for and identify a number of different types of birds. In about 90 minutes covering just a 1/2 mile you can see ducks\, shorebirds\, marsh birds\, and maybe migrants. After the Wetlands\, you will travel 7 miles to Rich and Nanette Armstrong’s house where you will see how to set up a yard (they have over 20 feeders) to attract birds and learn to identify different riparian birds. There will be binoculars to borrow if you do not have any\, and you will get to look through Rich’s scope. \nRating: 2\nTransportation: Self-drive\nMeal: None\nCost: $45\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Big Springs (Clarkdale)

We will encounter some rough footing along the way\, make sure you have appropriate footwear. We are expecting a nice variety of birds; flycatchers and swallows out in the open\, Verdin and Bell’s Vireo as we make our way down to the Verde and the usual suspects along the Verde River. There should be Yellow Warblers\, Common Yellowthroats\, Summer Tanagers and hopefully a Black Hawk or two. \nRating: 3\nCost: $45\nCapacity: 12\nTransportation: Self-drive\nMeal: None\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Camp Verde - Copper Canyon & Salt Mine Wines Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This field trip begins in Camp Verde where we will turn off from South Oasis Road and go up Forest Service Road 136 to trailhead parking adjacent to the Copper Canyon drainage. \nWe will bird desert scrub\, pinon/juniper\, and riparian habitat. Most years there is a trickle of water and a small waterfall in Copper Canyon for a portion of this trip. After birding\, we will be treated to lunch at nearby Salt Mine Wine Vineyard and Winery. During lunch\, Chip Norton will talk about current efforts in Camp Verde to maintain/improve summer flows in the Verde River. On this trip there will be three miles of walking on mostly level\, but sometimes rough ground. Optional rock scrambling is required to view the waterfall. Restrooms are available at the trailhead parking location. Please bring water\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and a snack. \nCost: $115\nRating: 4 (4 is for viewing waterfall\, you can skip this and it would be a 3)\nTransportation: Vans & Meet Up spot at the Chevron in Camp Verde\nMeal: Lunch served at Salt Mine Wine\n  \n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival.
