SUMMARY:West Valley Astronomy Club: Meeting - Rubin’s Revolution: From Data to Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Our meetings feature great Guest Speakers – distinguished astronomers\, including staff astronomers from various observatories and professional astronomers at universities. A range of topics in space-science\, astronomy and astrophysics are covered at the meetings and include discussion of technologies involved – cameras\, spectroscopy and other instrumentation. \nThe agenda often has show-and-tell presentations by club members or small workshops\, and normally includes updates on club activities and announcements. Coffee and cookies are available\, and we generally have door prizes and a 50/50 Raffle. \n  \nSpeaker: Ardis Herrold\, Senior Education Specialist\, NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory \nTopic: Rubin’s Revolution: From Data to Discovery \nAbstract: The NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory will begin operations late this year. The observatory will employ a number of innovative technologies while conducting a ten-year survey of the southern sky\, providing access to a vast data set that will enable an unprecedented number of discoveries. Learn more about this amazing new observatory and the types of science it will support. \nBio: Ardis Herrold is the Senior Education Specialist for Rubin Observatory. She oversees the Rubin Observatory Education program\, which includes creation of classroom investigations using authentic data\, teacher support materials\, and teacher professional development. Prior to joining Rubin Observatory\, Ardis taught physical\, Earth\, and space sciences at the high school and college level\, as well as working in planetariums and observatories. Ardis is a Past President of the National Earth Science Teachers Association and twice Past President of the Michigan Earth Science Teachers Association. A lifelong amateur astronomer\, she has a personal observatory near Tucson\, AZ\, where she enjoys imaging deep sky objects\, comets and supernovae. \n  \nLocation: Beardsley Recreation Center\n12755 W Beardsley Rd\, Sun City West\, AZ 85375

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Parvathy Prem – Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory \nTopic: The Moon: Recent Lunar Science and What Lies Ahead \nBio: Dr. Parvathy Prem is a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel\, MD. Parvathy was born in Kerala\, India\, and lived and studied in the UK\, India\, and Singapore before moving to the US in 2010. She holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin\, and now spends most of her time studying the Moon using computer models. She is particularly interested in the Moon’s water cycle\, and in understanding how visiting spacecraft interact with the lunar environment. Dr. Prem is also a member of the science teams for NASA’s ongoing Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and upcoming Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) missions. \nFormat: ZOOM Presentation \n\n\n\n\nBeardsley Recreation Center\, #1 Chicory Room\n\n12755 W Beardsley Rd\nSun City West\, AZ 85375

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Charles J Law \nTopic: Star and planet formation \nBio: Charles Law is a postdoctoral researcher and NASA Sagan Fellow at the University of Virginia\, having previously completed both his undergraduate studies and PhD in astrophysics at Harvard University. His research focuses on the chemistry of star and planet formation. He uses observations from radio telescopes such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub millimeter Array (ALMA) to characterize the chemical environments in which young planets are forming. As an AAS Astronomy Ambassador\, Charles is also interested in science communication and is invested in increasing access and promoting engagement in astronomy and STEM fields. \nFormat: ZOOM Presentation \n\n\n\n\nBeardsley Recreation Center\, #1 Chicory Room\n\n12755 W Beardsley Rd\nSun City West\, AZ 85375

SUMMARY:West Valley Astronomy Club: Astrobiology
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Joshua Abbatiello \nTopic: Astro-biology from its beginnings as a field to current. \nBio: Josh Abbatiello has a Bachelor’s of Science in geology and is currently a PhD. Candidate (geology as well) at the University of South Florida. In the broadest sense\, (he says) he is a biogeochemist. He uses techniques of biology\, geology\, and chemistry to understand the element phosphorus. He studies how phosphorus pertains to the origin of the earliest molecules billions of years ago and its immense importance to us today. He also relates that information to determining potential for life on other planets. \nFormat: ZOOM Presentation \n\n\n\n\nBeardsley Recreation Center\, #1 Chicory Room\n\n12755 W Beardsley Rd\nSun City West\, AZ 85375

SUMMARY:West Valley Astronomy Club: Star Party
DESCRIPTION:Our viewing location is close to the Northwest Valley and easy to get to on paved roads. It provides a fairly dark sky for astronomical viewing and has proved to be an excellent site for our purposes. The star party site is on Arizona State Trust Land and the state requires everyone to have a State Land Use Permit. \n\n\n\nStar Party Liability Disclaimer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe West Valley Astronomy Club (WVAC) is not responsible for the property or liability of any star party participant\, nor will the club be held liable for their actions or possessions. WVAC is not responsible for any vehicular damage\, theft\, or mechanical difficulties that may occur while attending a star party. WVAC recommends when attending events at our star party site\, which is on Arizona State Trust Land\, that you obtain a State Land Use Permit. WVAC also strongly recommends adherence to the doctrine of ‘safety in numbers’ when it comes to remote observing sites. In the interest of safety\, it is recommended that you don’t go to remote sites alone and that someone knows where you have gone each time you go out observing.
