Because of the sensitive nature of these sites and their cultural significance\, this hike is limited to just 5 participants\, ensuring respectful exploration. Reservations are required\, these programs tend to fill up quickly. To inquire about available spots on the Ledge Hike\, please call the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center at (928) 526-3367. \nKnow Before You Go:\n\nThe Ledge Hike traverses an unmaintained path within Walnut Canyon National Monument\, featuring steep drop-offs\, no handrails\, and uneven footing in certain areas.\nThis hike is not suitable for young children or individuals who have difficulty hiking in challenging conditions.\nThe hike spans approximately 1.5 miles round-trip and will take around 1.5 to 2 hours\, descending 185 feet into Walnut Canyon and concluding with a 185-foot ascent out via 273 stairsteps.

Meet in front of Yavapai Geology Museum. Learn how this immense canyon formed and the science behind the landscape. The program is 30 minutes long and is accessible. \n\nGrand Canyon is one-mile deep\, up to 18 miles wide\, 277 river miles long\, and displays more than 20 layers of rock The layers tell stories of oceans\, deserts\, mountains\, and swamps that were once here\, brought into existence\, then swept away over the vast expanse of time.\n\n\nGrand Canyon is a geologically young landscape being sculpted from very old rocks. Knowing some of the stories encoded in the rock layers enriches your understanding of our planet and enhances your experience at Grand Canyon.\n\nThe program is free of charge. Children must be accompanied by an adult.  The Geology Talk is subject to cancellation\, or may be moved indoors due to inclement weather or when lightning danger is present.

DESCRIPTION:This Summer\, join a ranger at 9 am for a 45 to 60 minute fossil discovery walk. This is a fun\, family-friendly activity. \nThe program is a favorite of Junior rangers who are able to explore a fossil bed and discover brachiopods\, sponges\, and other marine creatures preserved here in limestone for millions of years. \nMeet the ranger at 9 am by the Bright Angel Trailhead sign (near Kolb Studio and Bright Angel Lodge). From the trailhead\, it’s a short (0.25 mile) guided walk along the Canyon Rim Trail to the fossil site. \nThe program is free of charge. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Knowing some of the stories encoded in the rock layers enriches your understanding of our planet and enhances your experience at Grand Canyon.\n\nThe program is free of charge.
