SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: Natural History Book Club - "The Wild Dark: Finding the Night Sky in the Age of Light" by Craig Childs
DESCRIPTION:Sitting in the Highlands Center ramada while the wind rustles through the ponderosa pine needles and a robin chirps\, there is a moment of silent contemplation. Natural history is complicated – personal and universal at the same time. Our Natural History book club met beginning in 2021 and the discussions occasionally resulted in these special moments of quiet thoughtfulness. \nWe’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. Reading is something on many of our “to-do” lists\, but some of us need a little extra incentive\, like having a group that meets monthly to discuss. This group focuses on books related to natural history\, with some southwestern component\, written in the last decade or so. Books are selected by the group and then sold in the Benson Family Nature Store. We take our time reading – two months for each book. And we encourage personal connections\, as well as universal questioning\, when we come together for our meetings. People can jump in at any time! \nJoin the Natural History Book Club today! \nBook club meetings are the first Friday of each month from 1pm-2pm and meet in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Discovery Gardens Ramada\, weather depending. \n2026 Natural History Book Club Books and Dates: \n\nApril / May\nThe Wild Dark: Finding the Night Sky in the Age of Light\, by Craig Childs

SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: The Age of Loneliness
DESCRIPTION:Laura Marris is an essayist\, poet\, and translator. Her work has appeared in The Kenyon Review\, The Believer\, Harper’s\, The New York Times\, The Paris Review Daily\, The Yale Review\, Words Without Borders and elsewhere. She has received fellowships from MacDowell\, a Katharine Bakeless Fellowship from the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference\, and a grant from the Robert B. Silvers Foundation. Her first book\, The Age of Loneliness\, was published by Graywolf 2024. She teaches creative writing at the University at Buffalo. \nIn this debut essay collection\, Laura Marris reframes environmental degradation by setting aside the conventional\, catastrophic framework of the Anthropocene in favor of that of the Eremocene\, the age of loneliness\, marked by the dramatic thinning of wildlife populations and by isolation between and among species. She asks: how do we add to archives of ecological memory? How can we notice and document what’s missing in the landscapes closest to us? \nFilled with equal parts alienation and wonder\, each essay immerses readers in a different strange landscape of the Eremocene. Among them are the Buffalo airport with its snowy owls and the purgatories of commuter flights\, layovers\, and long-distance relationships; a life-size model city built solely for self-driving cars; the coasts of New England and the ever-evolving relationship between humans and horseshoe crabs; and the Connecticut woods Marris revisits for the first time after her father’s death\, where she participates in the annual Christmas Bird Count and encounters presence and absence in turn. \nVivid\, keenly observed\, and driven by a lively and lyrical voice\, The Age of Loneliness is a moving examination of the dangers of loneliness\, the surprising histories of ecological loss\, and the ways that community science―which relies on the embodied evidence of “ground truth”―can help us recognize\, and maybe even recover\, what we’ve learned to live without.

SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: No Place for a Lady by Shelby Tisdale - Author Presentation & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:No Place for a Lady: The Life Story of Archaeologist Marjorie F. Lambert by Shelby Tisdale\, Ph.D. \nIn the first half of the twentieth century\, the Southwest beckoned and the burgeoning field of archaeology thrived. Among those who heeded the call\, Marjorie Ferguson Lambert became one of only a handful of women who not only left their imprint on the study of southwestern archaeology but flourished. Through Lambert’s life story\, we gain new insight into the intricacies and politics involved in the development of archaeology and museums in New Mexico and the greater Southwest. We also learn about the obstacles that young women had to maneuver around in the early years of the development of southwest archaeology. \nSaturday\, May 10th \nPresentation at 1:00 pm followed by book signing \n$15 for members\, $20 for nonmembers \n*We will only have a small number of books on hand for purchase at the event. Please buy your books before coming to the event if possible\, for the author to sign. \nAbout the author: \nShelby J. SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: Natural History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. \nMay: The Back Yard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan

SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: Community Nature Study Series - From Sticks and Stones to Computers and Drones: The Evolution of Forest Management with Noël Fletcher
DESCRIPTION:Come join retired wildlife biologist Noël Fletcher to explore the history of Forest Management and some of the first tools used to measure trees. We will journey through history from Europe to the Eastern US and land in Chino Valley\, AZ where forestry is being taken to the stratosphere with new tools! Discover old and new ways to look at the trees around you and see the forest from a new perspective. \nAbout Noël Fletcher: \nI am a wife\, mother\, grandmother\, and retired wildlife biologist. I was born and raised on a horse farm in Pennsylvania. I got my Wildlife degree from the University of Idaho. I worked for the Forest Service for 39 years in Idaho\, California\, and Arizona. My main responsibilities were balancing what people wanted with what wildlife needed. The diverse demands of uses for public lands with equally diverse wildlife species and habitats presented many opportunities for negotiating and finding creative solutions.
