SUMMARY:Bright Side Bookshop: Sunday Storytime
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Sunday Story Time at Bright Side Bookshop! This fun-filled morning features a reading of A Spoonful of Frogs\, followed by a free craft activity for little book lovers to enjoy. \nThis Month’s Story:  \nA witch’s favorite treat is frog soup. Luckily\, it’s healthy and easy to make. To give it that extra kick and a pop of color\, the key ingredient is a spoonful of frogs. But how do you keep the frogs on the spoon? They hop\, they leap\, they hide. . . and they escape. What is a poor witch to do? \nCasey Lyall is a master of comedic timing with her surprising and energetic text. The solution to the witch’s dilemma will surprise and delight young readers and their parents alike. Caldecott Honoree Vera Brosgol’s vibrant\, hilarious illustrations make the witch—and the frogs!—practically leap off the page. A must-have for young readers\, parents\, witches\, frog lovers\, and aspiring chefs. \nCraft Activity: We will be making a cauldron and frogs puppets to take home!

SUMMARY:Bright Side Bookshop: Framing Nature - An Evening with Yolonda Youngs
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Bright Side Bookshop for a special evening with Yolonda Youngs as she shares her novel\, Framing Nature. This free event will include a reading\, Q&A\, and book signing. \nAbout The Book:\nWinner of the 2024 John Brinkerhoff Jackson Prize from American Association of Geographers \nThe Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is an internationally known feature of the North American landscape\, attracting more than five million visitors each year. A deep cultural\, visual\, and social history has shaped the Grand Canyon’s environment into one of America’s most significant representations of nature. Yet the canyon is more than a vacation destination\, a movie backdrop\, or a scenic viewpoint; it is a real place as well as an abstraction easily summoned in the minds of Americans. The Grand Canyon\, or the idea of it\, is woven into the fabric of American cultural identity and serves as a cultural reference point—an icon. \nIn Framing Nature Yolonda Youngs traces the idea of the Grand Canyon as an icon and the ways people came to know it through popular imagery and visual media. She analyzes and interprets more than fourteen hundred visual artifacts\, including postcards\, maps\, magazine illustrations\, and photographs of the Grand Canyon\, supplemented with the words and ideas of writers\, artists\, explorers\, and other media makers from 1869 to 2022. Youngs considers the manipulation and commodification of visual representations and shifting ideas\, values\, and meanings of nature\, exploring the interplay between humans and their environments and how visual representations shape popular ideas and meanings about national parks and the American West. Framing Nature provides a novel interpretation of how places\, especially national parks\, are transformed into national and environmental symbols. \nAbout The Author:\nYolonda Youngs is a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at California State University\, San Bernardino. She is the coeditor of The American Environment Revisited: Environmental Historical Geographies of the United States.

And so Bob\, now very different from all the other Bobs\, sets out to live life as a vampire snail\, discovering his knack for sleeping upside down and his taste for tomatoes. Come with author Stephen W. Hinch as he explores the mesas and the canyons of the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest-the Slickrock Desert. Along the way you will discover its history\, natural history\, geology\, ecology\, and what we know of its earliest inhabitants. And you will revel in its beauty in a series of inspiring photographs. But all is not well in this magnificent land. You will also learn of the threats from those who would destroy it forever for short-term gain\, and of the work being done by dedicated individuals and groups to protect it. It is a story every lover of the American wilderness needs to know. \nThis event is free and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged: please RSVP here. \n— \nStephen W. Hinch is the author of The Slickrock Desert: Journeys of Discovery in an Endangered American Wilderness. This past May\, the publishing industry’s largest international trade association\, IBPA\, named The Slickrock Desert winner of a 2023 Benjamin Franklin Silver Award for being one of the year’s three best books in the category of Regional Nonfiction. \nSteve has explored the lands of the American Southwest for forty years\, either on solo hikes into remote areas or with like-minded photographers on multi-day expeditions. A recognized expert on the use of GPS in the wilderness\, his book\, Outdoor Navigation with GPS\, now in its third edition\, is a bestselling guide to the subject. He is the author of five books and a contributing author to three more. Trained as an electrical engineer\, he earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees from Harvey Mudd College and holds three patents in telecommunications technologies. Steve lives in Santa Rosa\, California. He claims his expeditions into the Slickrock Desert have been a necessary counterpoint to his life as a senior executive in the high-technology industry.
