SUMMARY:Agave Heritage Festival: Agave Crafted by Landscapes Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Across Mexico\, agave grows in landscapes defined by soil\, climate\, elevation\, and season. These conditions shape how the plant develops in the field\, influencing everything from sugar formation to harvest decisions\, and ultimately the flavors that appear in the glass. \nIn this seminar\, we explore terroir in practical terms. How do soil composition and elevation influence agave maturation? What role do rainfall patterns and temperature shifts play in development? And how do local growing conditions guide the choices producers make in cultivation and harvest? \nDrawing on real production experience across multiple agave-growing regions\, this conversation centers on origin: the land\, climate\, and environmental conditions that shape agave long before it becomes spirit. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how these differences reveal themselves in aroma\, texture\, and flavor. \n  \n  \nPart of the Agave Heritage Festival \nTo celebrate and sustain the cultural\, ecological\, and economic significance of agave through binational collaboration\, storytelling\, and community-rooted experiences. \nWe bring together voices from the Sonoran Desert and beyond to honor agave’s legacy and ignite collective action for a more resilient future.

SUMMARY:Agave Heritage Festival: Spirit of the Sierras - Bacanora Without Borders Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:  \nBacanora is born in the Sonoran sierras — and its future is increasingly binational. \nThis session begins with a focused panel born out of our community-led Field Notes series featuring producers\, exporters\, distributors\, and industry leaders examining how bacanora moves from rural production to U.S. markets. The conversation will address trade pathways\, regulatory frameworks\, distribution challenges\, and the economic realities of expanding a regional spirit across borders. \nModerated by Laura Espinoza (Asociación de Mujeres del Bacanora y Maguey de México)\nJorge Arreola (Bacanora Cola Blanca)\nMarcela Herrera Flores (GNO destilados S.A. de C. V.)\nJ. Benjamin Soto Beltrán (B8 El General Bacanora) \nThe panel transitions into a facilitated roundtable by Laura Espinoza\, inviting the public into direct dialogue around building stronger U.S.–Mexico partnerships. Together\, we will explore how growth can remain rooted in place\, support Sonoran producers\, and strengthen cross-border economic connection. \nConducted in Spanish and English\, this session is designed for meaningful binational exchange and practical next steps. \n  \nPart of the Agave Heritage Festival \nTo celebrate and sustain the cultural\, ecological\, and economic significance of agave through binational collaboration\, storytelling\, and community-rooted experiences. \nWe bring together voices from the Sonoran Desert and beyond to honor agave’s legacy and ignite collective action for a more resilient future.

SUMMARY:Agave Heritage Festival: Field Notes - Resilient Desert and Food Systems + Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Field Notes: Regeneration in Bloom brings together a mix of 2026 panel proposals and festival-curated adaptations\, all centered on agave as a practical tool for regenerative agriculture in arid and semi-arid landscapes. Across the session\, we look at how agave can support soil restoration\, water-smart farming\, and long-term resilience\, grounded in ecological knowledge and place-based agricultural practice. \nJoin us for a chiltepín plant scale hosted by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and a heritage foods food truck invite for lunch! \n10:00 AM to 11:00 AM | Resilient Desert Food Systems\nModerated by Dr. Jonathan Mabry (Tucson City of Gastronomy)\nCesar Lopez (Santa Cruz Farm)\nDr. Laurel Bellante (University of Arizona)\nWhat does a desert food system look like when it is built for heat\, drought\, and the long run? This conversation looks at agave through a food systems lens\, connecting its deep roots in desert food traditions with emerging approaches to climate-adapted agriculture and the role agave can play in shaping resilient food economies across the Sonoran Desert. \n11:00 AM to 12:00 PM | Agave for Regenerative Soil Health and Working Lands\nCommunity-led session\nModerated by Dr. César Iván Ojeda Linares (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)\nDr. Yessica Viridiana Fernandez Galicia (University of California\, Davis)\nDr. Samuel Sandoval Solis (University of California\, Davis)\nRandy Young (La Tierra del Jaguar)\nJoin us for a conversation on how agave can help restore degraded lands in dry regions\, from improving soil health to supporting resilient working landscapes. A video by Dr. Ana G. Valenzuela Zapata opens the discussion as we connect community knowledge and field practice with new ideas for using agave beyond spirits\, including fiber\, forage\, and other plant-based products.

SUMMARY:Agave Heritage Festival: Spirit of Sonora at the Tucson Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:Spirit of Sonora is a signature community gathering of the Agave Heritage Festival\, celebrating the living heritage of the Sonoran Desert and its agave cultures. This free\, open-air event highlights bacanora alongside a wide range of agave-based products that reflect agave’s deep integration into regional life. \nThrough tastings\, music\, presentations\, vendors\, and hands-on activities\, Spirit of Sonora invites the community to experience agave beyond spirits-connecting culture\, ecology\, and creativity in one shared space. The evening features agave tastings\, screen printing\, desert conservation leaders\, and local makers\, making it a cornerstone event of the Festival weekend.
