We want students to have a sense of belonging within the mathematics community.
Students have broad identities and ties to many different communities. One aspect of their identity is also that they are a mathematician. We would like them to see themselves as such. The “And I’m a Mathematician” poster allows them to share ways the various ways they identify, for example, communities they are a part of, things they enjoy, and ways they describe themselves. We want students to understand that all of these can coexist with being a mathematician as well. Being a mathematician is something that can be a part of who they are and not something distant or inaccessible.
